I bought this book specifically for my Mam after it was recommended by a fellow grandparent of an autistic child. I didn’t tell her so it just landed through the letterbox this week. She couldn’t put it down and read it in one sitting.
The book is written by a thirteen year old autistic boy who wants you to imagine how daily life would be without speech, throw into the mix that your senses are overwhelmed by colours, patterns, smells etc. It is absolutely fascinating to see the responses to questions we all want to know the answers to.
When I was small, I didn’t even know that I was a kid with special needs. How did I find out? By other people telling me that I was different from everyone else and that this was a problem.
Questions like Why are you obsessive about certain things? Do you have a sense of time? Why do you wave goodbye with you palm facing yourself? What’s the worst thing about autism? So many questions.
It’s really easy to read and like I said i’m fascinated by the answers.
